The exhibition Uncontrolled Matters is an attempt to draw attention to the slightly different side of Bartosz Kokosiński’s painting, a desire to show how strongly he is connected with the extra-artistic reality. The exposition was put together to pinpoint the contradictions, the paths of tensions and crisscrossing directions, which signpost his artistic evolution. The dialectical relationship of this art with reality results from the desires that are extremely hard to reconcile; the physical annexing of all objects, working with them in the scale of 1:1 and the will to erase them, irreversibly replace them in a distillate of charred, monochromatic abstractions.
It is not only painting about painting as a medium. It is the artist struggling with the process of putting to death and bringing back to life. Travelling through the nooks and corners of his imagination from black to colour our emotions do not change drastically despite the different experiences we are exposed to.
History has shown that art can absorb anything. Perhaps so can history of art. It seems that the works of Bartosz Kokosiński have emerged from this rule, some kind of chaotic reality, which cannot be put in order and clear form. Nonetheless, it needs to obey its rules. As a result of the forces clashing with each other we receive paintings transcending into sculptures or installations.
His works may be called borderline also due to their potential to transmutate, transform every-day objects into art. This process does not mean prolonging their life, however, but rather reporting their expiry. The remaining works are formed from the “remains of the symbolic” and the stories behind them are quite often stories of decomposition. The fragments of the world that are saved from destruction are collected and reinterpreted by placing them inside the frame. The boarder of the painting is not easily defined. The author blurs it intentionally in order to widen the battlefield for the space beyond the canvas. This way the painting often changes into a structure that dominates the space. It might be said ironically that the gesture of uncontrollable appropriation of the world causes the art, which is unable to convey all that matters, to throw it physically out of the frames of the presentation.
In this point it connects in a specific way with another strategy of processing the remains of reality. Monochromatic works by Kokosiński bring to mind a burnt photography. They capture the picture of the word deprived of its image. The gesture of erasing the references, blurring the vision has its roots in the iconoclastic process of destruction. It is a way to distill products of our imagination. It means, at the same time, working with the remains of personal memories. The series of black paintings was created under the impression of the landscapes from the artist’s childhood. They are created by double mediation: reality – picture – painting.
Sublimation is achieved by changing the state. It exposes the alchemic potential of Kokosiński’s imagination, in which instead of turning into gold the matter is directed downwards.
